The state of California on July 7th listed the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer named Glyphosate as a carcinogen. This is a scary notion since most of the conventionally made wine use Roundup in the spring to clear weeds from their spring crops. So under a state law called Proposition 65, this requires that glyphosate products sold in California carry a cancer warning sign. And don’t feel too sorry for Monsanto, the parent of Roundup is fighting the state in court.
So for people that are looking for organic or biodynamic wines should breath a sigh of relief that their intelligent choices may actually keep you from getting ill. Now let it be known that I am not a doctor, I don’t play one on TV and this is not medical advice. But it just makes sense to me that if you put carcinogens in your body you have a really good chance of catching some horrible diseases. It also suggests that if you avoid these products in general or at least as much as you can, you too can have six pack abs. Wait a minute. I mean you too can avoid unnecessary medical chaos in the future.
In a perfect world gophers, goats, sheep and grazing deer keep the in-between grass (between the grape vines) trimmed and perfect whilst man-made hawk boxes nest raptors that keep the fields rodent free and owl boxes because these guys too, eat rodents. Then batting clean up are the bat boxes because they eat bugs like mad. Cue the harps. Oh, yeah. Kumbaya my wine brothers and sisters.
But this version unfortunately doesn’t exist on most wineries and they get doses and doses of man-made chemicals that just might not be the best thing for you. But if you got to have that wine that’s conventionally made, go to town. Just know you can find a better solution. Seek out wines not only low in sugar but made with organic grapes, yeast, sun, a little rain and not much else. Organic and biodynamic all day at Wine Republic.
